Ducted vs Split System Air Conditioning: Which Is Better?

There is no single 'best' system — only the best fit for your home. Here is how ducted and split compare.

Ducted and split systems are the two most common ways to cool and heat a Melbourne home. Both are excellent when matched to the right property. The better question is not which is superior overall, but which is right for you.

Split systems: flexible and cost-effective

A split system has an indoor unit connected to an outdoor unit, conditioning a single room or open area. They are popular for good reason:

  • Lower upfront cost than a whole-home ducted system
  • Efficient, especially when cooling or heating one area at a time
  • Quick and relatively simple to install
  • Ideal for apartments, single rooms and additions

The trade-off is that each unit covers one area. Cooling several rooms means several units, which can affect the look of the home and the total cost.

Ducted systems: whole-home comfort

Refrigerated ducted air conditioning conditions the entire home through concealed ducts and discreet vents, controlled by zones. Its strengths are:

  • A clean, almost invisible finish — only the vents are visible
  • Even, whole-home comfort with room-by-room zone control
  • One integrated system rather than several wall units
  • Strong appeal for new builds, renovations and larger homes

The trade-offs are a higher upfront cost and the need for adequate roof or ceiling space for ductwork. To understand why zoning is central to running a ducted system efficiently, see what ducted zoning really does.

So which is better?

As a general guide: split systems suit smaller homes, apartments, single rooms or tighter budgets, while ducted suits whole-home comfort, new builds and larger properties that value a seamless finish. Many homes end up with a mix — ducted throughout, plus a split system in a specific area such as a home office or granny flat.
