5 Signs Your AC Needs a Service Before Summer

A little attention in spring can save you an expensive breakdown during the first 40-degree day. Here are the warning signs worth acting on now.

Melbourne's climate asks a lot of a home air conditioner. A mild spring can turn into a run of 35-plus days almost overnight, and that is exactly when a neglected system tends to fail. The good news is that most breakdowns give you warning first. If you notice any of the signs below, it is worth booking a service before the peak season hits and technicians are booked out.

1. Weak airflow or uneven cooling

If some rooms cool quickly while others stay warm, or the airflow from your vents feels weaker than it used to, something is restricting the system. Common causes include a clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil, or a problem with the fan. In ducted air conditioning systems it can also point to a duct or zoning fault. Reduced airflow makes the system work harder for less comfort, which shows up on your power bill.

2. Warm air when it should be cold

Air that is only mildly cool, or not cold at all, usually means a refrigerant or compressor issue. Refrigerant does not get 'used up' in a healthy system, so low levels almost always mean a leak that needs to be found and repaired by a licensed technician — topping it up alone is not a fix.

3. Strange noises or smells

Rattles, grinding, buzzing or a persistent musty smell are all signals worth investigating. Noises often point to loose components or a failing fan motor, while musty odours usually mean moisture and mould building up inside the unit — something you do not want circulating through your home.

  • Grinding or squealing — a mechanical part may be wearing out
  • Clicking that will not stop — a possible electrical or relay fault
  • Musty or damp smells — moisture and mould inside the unit
  • Burning smells — switch the system off and call a technician

4. Higher energy bills for the same comfort

If your cooling costs have crept up without any change in how you use the system, efficiency is dropping somewhere. Dirty coils, blocked filters and ageing components all force the unit to run longer to reach the same temperature. Regular servicing keeps running costs in check — we cover this in more detail in 5 Ways to Improve Your Air Conditioner's Efficiency.

5. The system is short-cycling

Short-cycling is when the air conditioner switches on and off repeatedly without completing a proper cooling cycle. It wears components out quickly and rarely fixes itself. It can be caused by an incorrectly sized system, a thermostat fault, or low refrigerant, so it is worth having diagnosed early.

When should you book?

Spring and early summer are the ideal windows for a service in Melbourne — before the first heatwave, while the system is not under heavy load. If it has been more than 12 months since your last service, or you have noticed any of the signs above, it is a sensible time to have it checked.
