What Ducted Zoning Really Does

Zoning is one of the most useful features of a modern ducted system — and one of the least understood. Here is what it actually does.

If you are considering ducted air conditioning, you will hear a lot about 'zoning'. It is more than a marketing feature — used well, it is what makes a ducted system both comfortable and economical to run. Here is what zoning really does.

What is a zone?

A zone is simply an area of your home that can be controlled independently — often a group of rooms such as the bedrooms, or a single large living area. A zoned ducted system uses motorised dampers in the ductwork to direct conditioned air only to the zones that are switched on.

Why zoning matters

Without zoning, a ducted system conditions the whole house whenever it runs. That is a lot of wasted energy when you are only using a couple of rooms. Zoning lets you:

  • Cool or heat only the living areas during the day, and the bedrooms at night
  • Set different comfort levels for different parts of the home
  • Reduce the load on the system, which lowers running costs
  • Avoid over-conditioning rooms that are rarely used

This is one of the main reasons a well-designed ducted system can be surprisingly economical — a point we also make in our energy efficiency guide.

Zoning and system sizing

Zoning also affects how a system is designed. The number of zones, how they are grouped and the size of the unit all need to work together so that air distributes correctly no matter which zones are running. This is a design decision best made with an experienced installer, not an afterthought.

Smart controls

Modern zoned systems are usually controlled from a wall touchpad or a phone app, so you can schedule zones, adjust temperatures room by room, and turn things off remotely if you have left them running. It is a genuinely useful level of control for a busy household.

If you are planning a new ducted system or upgrading an older one, request a quote and we will design the zoning around how your household actually lives.
